Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the hand excavation of six small pits for the location of three oak benches to the south of Bodiam Castle (Scheduled Ancient Monument NMR No 24405). The bench A pits revealed no features or artefacts. The Bench B pits revealed evidence for the core of the millpond dam of late 14th century in date. No artefacts were revealed. The Bench C pits revealed some evidence for the survival of millpond sediments and the presence in the southern of the two pits of a modern drain and a mass of siltstone pieces with soil between.
