Abstract: |
Phase 1 of the Domestic Range Undercroft conversion programme involved archaeological recording in three areas, of which this area was one. At the northeast end of the chapel undercroft a new entrance was created through a former window, reached from a new external stair and with a new stair on the inside. A small archaeological trench (Trench A) was excavated on the site of the external stair before building work began, in December 1992 / January 1993. This showed that the northeast bay and the adjacent stair turret were added together, probably in the early 15th century, to the original mid-14th century chapel. The original 15th century courtyard level and part of a probable foundation to the external stair to the chapel shown on the Smythson plan of the castle of c.1600 were also located.[AIP] |
