Abstract: |
<summary>An investigation was undertaken following the discovery of structural remains during the excavation of a hole for a septic tank at a site to the east of the mill. The excavation revealed a substantial wall of medieval masonry and remains of what was undoubtedly a medieval (?14th/15th century) gateway - probably the principal gatehouse of Brinkburn Priory. The gateway consisted of a well-worn sandstone threshold with a raised door-check carried on substantial foundations. On the north side the jamb survived to a height of two courses, with a substantial moulding continuing to ground level with no base. The south side stood only up to threshold level and south of the position of the jamb only foundations remained. The remainder of the structure to the south was probably destroyed by flooding of the river. Substantial further fragments of wall added to the picture, but were insufficient to reconstruct the entire layout of the gatehouse. {italon}Sec(abr/adp)(11c){italoff} |
