Abstract: |
<summary>A trench was excavated to evaluate a site proposed for development, in an area immediately to the rear of the modern property frontage to London Road. A possible medieval ploughsoil pre-dating the extra-mural expansion of Newark was identified below post-medieval deposits, refuse pits and a lime-kiln. A further accumulation of ploughsoil sealed these features and deposits, indicating the decline of this suburb during the 17th or early 18th century, whilst a series of pits cut into this ploughsoil indicated 19th century renewed expansion of Newark. In the southern part of the site a ditch, possibly a secondary ditch representing part of the town's Civil War defences of winter 1642-3, was identified. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
