Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was carried out across the area to the rear of 21 High Street and its vicinity. The bank of the River Lea in this area had been proved to have been utilised by Mesolithic groups and several sites were known. Although no archaeology was known from the assessment site, it was concluded that there was a small possibility that Mesolithic material would be encountered. The assessment site also lay within the core of the Stanstead Abbots village and features relating to the late medieval/early post-medieval (and possibly earlier medieval) development of the village may be found. Modern disturbance was likely to be limited to the foundation trenches of former small buildings contained within the assessment site as no terracing or ground reduction was apparent. No. 21 High Street was a grade II Listed Building, with parts dating from as early as the 17th century. [Au(adp)]
