Abstract:
An excavation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development, at the site of a post-medieval and a 20th century maltings. A Bronze Age settlement had been discovered to the south-west, and cropmarked ring ditches suggestive of prehistoric settlement or burial activity had been identified immediately to the west. The excavation successfully located the remains of the original maltings building. Excavation in two areas across the main body of the building and in the area of the kiln identified the three main load-bearing walls of the malt house, internal features such as brick plinths and a floor surface, the foundation and lower courses of both the drying kiln and the linking building, and associated brick-built drains. Two phases of construction were identified. Dating evidence recovered from brick typologies and limited cartographic evidence suggested that the malting was unlikely to have been constructed before the latter part of the 18th century, and had probably been built in the earlier part of the 19th century. At some point between 1922 and 1958 the malting had been demolished, but not before it had shared the same site and presumably operated in tandem with the present malting for at least 25 years. Two trenches excavated toward the south and west of the site revealed no evidence of prehistoric or other archaeological activity. [Au(abr)]
