Abstract: |
<summary>The examination of the outer ward showed that the circuit of its curtain remained virtually intact except for two gaps on the east. The curtain was probably of mid 12th century date, with later patching and repairs. No trace above ground remained of the Great Gatehouse, but a surviving fragment of the Chapel of St Margaret, incorporated in a later stable, was recorded. Earthwork features in the south-west quadrant remain enigmatic. In the Post-Medieval period the ward served as gardens and pasture, with one group of late 18th and 19th century farm buildings. {italon}AIP{italoff}{spacea} |
