Abstract: |
17 prospecting test pits were machine dug on derelict land in order to establish the presence or absence of former palaeo landsurfaces and any associated cultural residues. Substantial parts of ancient preserved 'bog trees' were found in six of the test pits. No cultural residues were found, however, there was an interface between overlying clay and peat in at least 15 of the 17 pits. It was this peat which contained the preserved ancient trees, found lying horizontally in all cases. The species had yet to be identified but it was thought that at least the majority of the samples would be of yew. The date was as yet unknown but was likely to have been Neolithic or Bronze Age, on the basis of other comparable finds in Greater London. [Au(abr)] |
