Abstract: |
The report considered the archaeological impact of a proposed refurbishment on the site (designated as a conservation area) and it's immediate vicinity (within a 100m radius). The site lay on the junction of two Roman roads and earlier excavation across the rear of 67 Watling Street in 1961 had revealed the remains of a Roman tessellated pavement. Previous excavations revealed further evidence for the occupation of the area during the Roman and Saxon periods. A large number of documentary sources exist detailing the area during the medieval and post-medieval periods and excavation had revealed a number of medieval stone buildings. The report concluded that the proposed works would probably involve the removal of archaeological remains which could have survived beneath the modern basement slab. [Au(adp)] |
