Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the building of a garage block. No recognisable archaeological features were recorded. The site appeared to be but into the edge of the low mound that existed between the entrance to the garden next to the lodge building and a short stretch of wall c.20m to the north. This wall appeared to retain the mound which the excavations for the ground beams had shown to be predominantly of humic loam. It was probable that this mound represented a dump of topsoil combined with some refuse and demolition material .No evidence for medieval deposits was recovered and the finds evidence suggested a post-medieval date for the thick accumulation of soil.
