Abstract: |
The investigations involved the excavation of 536 evaluation trenches. Most trenches revealed subsoil evidence for former ridge and furrow in the form of soil-filled furrows and truncated subsoil surfaces under former ridges. In several cases furlong boundaries between blocks of ridge and furrow were recorded. Three principal areas of archaeological activity were identified from the investigation; part of a probable prehistoric enclosure in Field D that survived in part as an earthworks in woodland outside the application boundary, medieval settlement remains in field N that were probably part of the former, now shrunken, medieval settlement of Shotton and an undated enclosure. Several undated features that re-date the ridge and furrow cultivation were recorded. Some may relate to work of superficial coal deposits,. A large pit in field M was found to be a four and mouth burial pit dating from 2001. [Au(abr)] |
