Abstract:
A topographic and geophysical survey was undertaken of a small complex of earthworks on the north side of the A69, 0.4km west of the village of Low Row, as part of an evaluation of the A69 improvements between Scarrow Hill and Gleugh Head. The earthworks lying just to the east of Middle Row appeared to represent several phases of development relating primarily to industrial and agricultural use of various periods. With the possible exception of a building on a platform, there was no evidence of settlement within this area, and the site ppeared to contain a mixture of quarries, ditches and field system. Only one feature could be dated with any degree of certainty, and this comprised a field boundary of late 18th or early 19th centry date. As the ditch element of this boundary overlay the extreme western extent of a quarry bank it was thought likely that the quarry predated the boundary and had probably been abandoned by the late 18th/early 19th century. Remains of a probable medieval open field system represented the earliest datable element of the site. [Au(adp)]
