Abstract: |
Trenches were excavated to sample for archaeological remains where it was proposed to construct several houses and an access road. A previous survey had identified earthworks on part of the land in question, and these had been characterised as a back lane of the medieval village and associated house platforms, as well as later features. Another part of the site had clearly been quarried away, removing any trace of former earthworks. The trenching was intended to sample those areas which may have suffered less from the effects of the quarrying. The results of the evaluation suggested that little or no medieval archaeology survived within the area of proposed development. Virtually all areas were shown to have suffered disturbance. A small area of surviving but as yet undated features was encountered, but after discussions with the developer it was determined that by slightly adjusting the proposed house plots, the area could be left undisturbed.
