Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office complex, which lay within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and an Area of Great Landscape Value, identified that significant past activity dating from the Paleaolithic onwards had been recorded in the surrounding area. The closest Palaeolithic findspots lay 400m from the site, whilst Mesolithic and Neolithic activity had also been attested nearby. There was a high probability that the area occupied by Walton Oaks had been exploited during the Roman period; known villa sites at Walton Heath and Walton-on-the-Hill were likely to have been set within large agricutural estates, which would have included extensive areas of arable land, divided into fields by boundaries of various forms. A field system had been recorded on aerial photographs, 600m to the south-east of the proposal site, and eight Roman coins had been found 300m to the east. The area also had potential for evidence of medieval occupation, and was known to have been occupied in the 17th century. A building on the eastern fringes of the proposed development was of early origin; the original cottage, which had later been extended, was thought to have pre-dated 1700. The main house at Walton Oaks had probably been constructed in c. 1820, whilst a stable block in the north-eastern part of the proposed complex, and a building used as a social club, dated from the late 19th century. It was noted that much of the proposal area had remained undeveloped, so that any archaeological features and deposits present were likely to have been well-preserved. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out. [Au(abr)]
