Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out prior to the removal of an accumulation of earth against the outside wall of a church. It was revealed that the foundation of the south wall of the nave had been built on the surface of the bedrock, having been built into a cut through the clay. This cut may have been the side of a terrace into which the church was built, rather than a construction trench. The south doorway had been framed with ashlar of Ham stone, of which the second course was chamfered. Further details of the construction of this part of the church were recorded, and two relatively modern features were found. These consisted of a ceramic land drain and a deep hole, which had probably been excavated for a ventilation duct. A vertical edge which may have been the cut of a grave was also observed. Artefacts recovered included late medieval and post-medieval pottery, window glass fragments, two clay pipe stem fragments and late medieval roof tile. [AIP] |
