Abstract: |
Five 3m by 1m trial trenches were excavated on the line of the proposed cable trench along Folgate Street and Spital Square. Three of the trenches were excavated within Scheduled Ancient Monument GL 162. The depth of the trenches was limited to that of the proposed cable: 1.8m below ground level. It was expected that medieval deposits associated with the Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital would lie beneath that level but that upstanding masonry remains might be affected, particularly the east wall of the chapter house. No medieval deposits or masonry remains were uncovered. However, substantial quantities of medieval and 16th century demolition remains were encountered in the trenches closest to the medieval cloister. Further east, street surfaces from the post-medieval period were found in Folgate Street, as were the front walls of houses dating to the early 18th century. One bone-lined cess pit was also recorded. [Au(adp)] |
