Abstract: |
An archaeological field evaluation, consisting of the excavation of three trial trenches, 19m by 3.2m, 20m by 2.9m and 18.3m by 5m, was undertaken across the site in advance of proposed residential development. The two trenches located in the southern and western parts of the site were devoid of any archaeological features or artefacts. The trench situated in the eastern part of the site revealed the location of a large cut feature, identified from historic map evidence as being a fishpond - possibly constructed in the mid-18th century. The pond had been constructed by quarrying the geological deposits of brickearth and gravel and showed no evidence of revetting or lining. The pond had been backfilled in very recent times, possibly immediately prior to the construction of the cinema on the adjacent site in 1932. [Au(adp)] |
