Abstract:
The preliminary assessment of the excavation results indicated multi-period activity on the site from the 12th century AD to the present day. A number of pits, postholes and stakeholes belonged to the earliest phase of activity which suggested relatively 'low status' activity on the site. A chalk, limestone and sandstone built well was excavated, and dated to the late medieval/early post-medieval period and was thought to belong to a 'high status' building nearby. Remains of three Tudor buildings were recorded, the largest of which was thought to be Compton House. Two 19th/20th century cellars truncated much of the archaeology along the north-western edge of the site. A large brick drain and soakaway were also dated to the 19th century. [Au(abr)]
