Abstract:		 An archaeological watching brief took place on a retail development site. The watching brief did not reveal any significant remains, nor were there any finds of pre 19th century date. A simple sequence of recent made ground and reworked soil overlay a largely sterile soil and weathered natural. The only notable feature was a brick-lined and domed well exposed in the basement excavation which intrinsically and on map evidence was dated to c.1870-90. The well may have been contemporary with the adjacent buildings (50-52) and was possibly constructed to serve both properties. Shallow brick rubble footings noted elsewhere on site could have related to mid 19th century or later buildings. It was likely that the site area remained open agricultural land until the mid 19th century. Subsequent maps showed the progressive development of the site from south to north as the town expanded.
