Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out in advance of the construction of an agrochemical store. This was to be an extension to an existing warehouse - a different location from that proposed when an evaluation was carried out in 1991 (see Hereford Archaeology Series, Report Nos. 118 & 126). The site was historically prone to flooding, but the extent of the marshy area was uncertain. Seven stanchion holes, with linking shallow trenches, were excavated down to natural gravel by JCB. To the east of the site, fourteenth or fifteenth century glazed floor tile was found in association with marshy deposits, indicating liability to flooding at that time. Also from this part of the site, a pit containing freshwater snails leads to similar conclusions. There was no evidence of marshy area on the south and north edges of the site. Horn cones in a couple of pits suggest tanning activity. Medieval pottery was present in some pits. A number of pits of post-medieval date contained charcoal, mortar, bricks and other building and household debris.[AIP] |
