Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. The archaeological data available suggested that there may be significant archaeology, particularly of the medieval period, within the redevelopment site. This would relate specifically to the development of Barnwell village rather than the Priory, which appeared to be confined to the site on the opposite side of Newmarket Road. Although most of the buildings on the map sequence were likely to have post-dated the 1731 fire, the medieval documentary evidence as depicted by Lobel, showed that the antecedents of the settlement were much older and in the same place as the later settlement. The information given in Fox's 'The Archaeology of the Cambridge Region' (C, Fox, 1923), although not location specific, also suggested that the Barnwell area saw activity, if not settlement, in periods from the Neolithic onwards, although particularly in the Iron Age and Saxon periods. That this was not reflected in modern finds was perhaps more a reflection of the rapid expansion of housing and quarrying in the 19th century than the absence of evidence per se. [Au(adp)]
