Abstract: |
An evaluation, comprising the excavation of three trial trenches and four test pits, on land proposed for the construction of a new Children's Hospital was undertaken. Although the site of the Nunnery of St Mary Magdalene was thought to possibly lay within the proposal area, no trace was found. Similarly, no trace of the Greyfriars Conduit at the northern end of the development was found, although a trench located on the street frontage by the Occupational Therapy Unit revealed a small colluvial soil profile buried beneath landfill of medieval date. Trenching elsewhere encountered evidence for the cutting of building terraces during the 18th century. Wall foundations and evidence for cellaring associated with buildings on Gloucester Place was also identified. [AIP] |
