Abstract: |
Planning permission had been granted for the construction of a residential building to contain ten two-bedroomed flats and surface car parking. As a result of the archaeological condition upon the planning permission, two trial trenches were opened. The earliest deposits were natural sand and gravel in trench 1 and clean natural sandy silt/clay (brickearth) in trench 2. The natural deposits in trench 1 were cut by a prehistoric ditch which contained one struck flint. The ditch was overlain by a post-medieval ploughsoil which also overlay the natural deposits in Trench 2. The layer was cut by one modern feature in trench 2 and was sealed by the modern surface deposit, which contained concrete and dated from the latter years of the last century. The report concluded that despite the presence of the one prehistoric ditch there was no need for any further archaeological measures in relation to the proposed redevelopment. [Au(abr)] |
