Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief to the south of the Saxon town of Hamwic showed the area to have been used for agriculture. Three flints, one a burin, and a small sherd of probable Iron Age pottery suggested intermittent prehistoric activity. The presence of Anglo-Norman pottery suggested that the area was ploughed and manured during the period, with reversion to pasture afterwards. The western edge of the saltmarsh was defined. The marsh deposits contained finds of medieval to modern date. [Au(abr)] |
