Abstract: |
Three trenches were excavated to evaluate land lying within the village of Toynton All Saints. Trench 1 revealed a number of clay pits used to obtain raw material for pottery production which had been backfilled with wasters (broken and misfired pottery). Trench 2 contained a small pit of possible medieval date and the interupted stone foundation for a timber building of unknown date. Trench 3 revealed a continuation of the area of waster pits seen in Trench 1. The pottery finds ranged fron early 13th to early 18th century in date. The early pottery appeared fresh indicating pottery production (producing waste material never used), whilst the later pottery was worn indicating a shift to domestic occupation. [Au(abr)] |
