Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during ground disturbance works in advance of development at a site which lay to the east of Warrington town centre. Evaluation of an adjacent site in 1996 had revealed that a large portion of the street frontage had been disturbed by modern development, although some features had survived to the rear, beneath deep deposits. The remains encountered had generally been of post-medieval date, but medieval pottery had been recovered. A wire works had occupied the proposal site itself in 1880. During the watching brief, garden soils containing pottery of 17th and 18th century date were revealed and brick-built structures with traces of a cellar and an associated surface were recorded. The buildings were situated as originally mapped by the 1880 Ordnance Survey. It was concluded that significant archaeological remains relating to use of the site in the post-medieval period had survived as sub-surface deposits and features. The depth of the deposits appeared to have increased from c. 1.5m at the rear of the Church Street frontage to over 3m in the vicinity of the former wire works. [AIP] |
