Abstract:
Salvage excavation and recording within the footings of a building extension recorded a mixed soil horizon containing a number of human skeletal fragments, sealed below a series of medieval to post-medieval yard surfaces and cut by recent soakaways. These represented at least five individuals, and probably dated to the medieval period. In addition, retrieved from a possible pit were numerous sherds belonging to a 13th century ceramic jug. The discovery of human remains appeared to indicate that a former graveyard of St James Church (which is located 20 metres to the north) exists in this part of the town. Also of interest was the recording of a name plate on the north-east elevation of the wall to the north and west of the excavation. The plate read "GRAY's Wall 1820" and related to the tradition of recording the name of the person responsible for the upkeep of the stretch of boundary wall. Though noted elsewhere in Louth this does not seem a common occurence. The presence of the plaque also indicated that whilst no buildings existed on the 1808 map, by 1820 construction work had probably begun. [Au(adp)]
