Abstract:
The area in question was currently occupied by the BBC's Film Studios. Planning permission had been granted for the scheme, and an archaeological condition attached to the development. The site was located in an area of known antiquity, as shown in archaeological, documentary and cartographic sources. The archaeological potential for prehistoric artefacts and features was moderate-high. It was unknown if the medieval village extended as far north as the development site, although the modern street pattern clearly preserved earlier routes and roadways, and the potential was considered to be low-moderate. The Ealing area saw large expansion during the post-medieval period, but not until the 19th century, and the potential of the site to retain archaeological deposits from this period was considered to be moderate. The western area of the site remained largely open ground until the 1930s when the film studios were built. The eastern and boundary of the site retained a greater likelihood for stratified archaeology, as Ealing Green was present on the 1777 map which showed a triangular island which once may have been a market place. The prior development of the original studios was likely to have had a negative impact on shallow archaeological deposits. The area of highest potential for remains from the medieval and post-medieval periods was in the eastern half of the site closest to Ealing Green. It was possible prehistoric deposits could be found in any part of the site, but they were particularly at risk of truncation where the basement was located. [Au(abr)]
