Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-base assessment was undertaken due to the proposed development of the site. The site was located in the Thames floodplain, just to the south of an Archaeological Priority Zone. In the past this area had been prone to flooding and for periods the site would have been completely submerged. As a result the area was thickly covered by alluvial deposits and peat, which were potentially rich in animal and plant remains that could provide valuable information about past environments. A geotechnical survey of the site indicated the presence of a sequence of strata comprising peat and alluvial clay between 3.3m and 6.7m thick. Excavations at nearby sites had revealed scatters of prehistoric artefacts within similar deposits. The principle impact of the proposed works would be the use of piled foundations and the excavation work, which would be likely to cause localised damage to deposits. The development might also alter the level of ground water, which could have result in the deterioration of organic remains. The report concluded that further investigations might be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits. [Au(abr)] |
