Abstract: |
Removal of the topsoil from the site of the proposed pumping station and pipeline easement revealed a number of features dating to the late 19th century or later. In the area of the pumping station features comprised, drain trenches, an area of laid stone setts (a former fording point of the river Wollen), with the remains of an associated lamp-post base. Within the limits of the easement, features appeared to be consistently linked to water supply and management of drainage within Fox Meadow. The site of a former agricultural outbuilding was located in the northern easement. The cutting of the pipe trench provided another opportunity to examine the character and extent of the medieval and post-medieval millpond deposits, known to have extended into the northeast corner of Fox Meadow. Removal of the layer of colluvium n Area 02, (Easement A), revealed a length of ditch 0017, the potential terminal of a second ditch 0027, and a possible old ground surface 0016. Both 0017 and 0016 produced shell tempered potsherds arguably consistent with a date in the later Anglo-Saxon period. Ditch 0017 also produced two closely spaced timbers, pile driven into the base of the ditch and preserved by water logging. Examination of a section recovered on the northern limit of Area 02 suggested the possibility of a third timber slot. The basal fill of ditch 0017 was noted to be an organic rich deposit. Area 03, in the western arm of the easement (easement C) produced evidence of three pits. Surrounding 0013 was an oval pit filled with limestone clasts, and two spreads of tabular limestone 0015 and 0020. Excavation of 0015 and 0020 indicated that they also covered small shallow pits, 0033 and 0036 respectively. Dating and function of these features was problematic, although two fragments of Samian and a single possible sherd of Anglo-Saxon pottery were recovered from the upper fill of 0013 and two additional sherds were recovered from below the stones of 0015. The strong evidence for significant Anglo-Saxon activity within Fox Meadow provided a basis for suspicions of a similar dating for these features in area 03. [Au(abr)] |
