Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based appraisal was undertaken prior to development. During the mid/late-19th century the site had been a Royal Naval dockyard and possibly contained foundations from buildings constructed in 1867, including an impressive terrace of officer's quarters, which were demolished in c. 1963. Prior to the 19th century development the site had been a formal garden belonging to the dockyard Commissioner. Despite no known archaeological evidence the site was located within an area of general archaeological activity. Previous terracing was likely to have removed any previously unrecorded archaeology that may have been present in the eastern part of the site. The natural ground level in the western and central parts of the site had been raised to level the site and this may preserved some archaeological features or evidence. However, the proposed trench-built foundations of the western building would impact other deposits. [Au(adp)] |
