Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of two trial trenches, 10m by 4m and 9.5m by 4m, was undertaken across the site of Creedy's Yard. 47 stake holes were revealed in trench 1 which had been superseded by 22 stake holes. Two pits were also revealed which, along with one of the earlier stake holes, contained pottery dating to the 12th/13th century. The nature of these features was difficult to gauge but their presence corresponded well with documentary sources which suggested the beginning of large scale settlement at Greenwich from this time. Any later medieval activity on the site was not revealed. Large masonry structures found in both trenches were of late medieval or Tudor date. The documentary date for Compton House of 1512 would fit the style and location of the building. It was not certain whether it was Comptons but the high status building materials suggested an important structure. Destruction deposits suggested that the building was demolished in the first part of the 17th [Au(adp)]
