Abstract:
An earthwork survey and a magnetometer survey were carried out at the proposed site of a residential development. Aerial photographs had indicated that widespread medieval earthworks lay to the north, south, east and west. Most of these appeared to have been associated with ridge and furrow, although some appeared to have reflected more specific settlement remains. During the magnetometer survey, several linear anomalies were recorded, and a number of ephemeral anomalies were noted on the north side of the site. The earthwork survey recorded a prominent east-west linear depression which was probably a ditch, the west end of which connected with a possible backfilled pond. Part of the course of the linear feature was perpetuated by a modern field boundary. A second possible pond lay in the north-west corner of the site, and minor undulations lay in the north-east corner. One of these, a circular depression, occupied the site of two linear anomalies which had been detected during the magnetometer survey. A north-south linear bank on the east side of the area followed the line of the eastern site boundary. The intensity of extant earthworks increased significantly to the north of the proposal area. It was concluded that the site had a moderate archaeological potential, and that it represented a small part of a much wider archaeological landscape which was presumed to have dated from within the medieval period. It was suggested that further clarification of the archaeological potential would require a limited programme of trial excavation. [AIP]
