Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an opencast coal mine identified that much of it had been affected by a previous episode of opencast mining in the 1950s. No evidence of prehistoric or Romano-British activity had been found at the site or in the immediate vicinity. Documentary sources indicated that the principal interest of the site lay in its associations with Aldercar Hall. This had been demolished in 1962, and fishponds relating to it had been removed during mining. The hall had lain within medieval and post-medieval parkland, and had been associated with water management features, coal mining and other industrial activity. A walkover survey of the site revealed that insubstantial traces of ridge and furrow lay within the fields at the south-eastern edge, and that a linear bank which had served to dam a stream and fill a large pond had survived within woodland. The gable end of a brick structure was noted on the site of Alder Row, a terrace of cottages built in 1791 and demolished by 1901. The archaeological remains observed at the site were assessed as being of only local importance. [AIP]
