Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the conversion of a barn at a site which had until recently been a working farm. Removal of the concrete floor revealed the abraded bases of a number of Victorian brick walls, and a patch of flint cobbling floor. These features related to a previous use of the barn, when it appeared to have been subdivided. The walls could have been animal stall dividers. A disturbed section of a post-medieval brick culvert was observed within a pipe run 26m to the north-west of the barn. The site was crossed by several of these culverts, which presumably dated to the late 16th century, when a manision was built at the site. A shallow ditch could also be seen in the pipe trench, and the lie of the ground suggested that a ditch, now vanished, once ran out westwards from the barn. [Au(abr)] |
