Abstract:
The desk-based assessment revealed that a large part of the present village was subject to statutory protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and formed part of the wider historic settlement. Cropmarks and arial photographs showed earthworks, largely the remains of medieval settlement, suggested that the village had shrunk since the Middle Ages and had been dramatically altered. Evidence for activity prior to the medieval was scarce. The earliest surviving map showed that the village was quite small in the later 18th century. By this time squatters had built some properties on waste ground. The former common fields were allocated to the Throckmorton family and were swiftly enclosed. Since then the landscape remained largely unchanged, except for the alteration of some field boundaries, and the construction of the airfield. In the latter case the impact was drastic and the former landscape was completely submerged under this 20th century development. [Au(abr)]
