Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at a development site, which lay adjacent to an area where 13th-15th century remains had been revealed during previous archaeological work. An early 12th century castle lay nearby. During the watching brief, two medieval ditches containing 13th-14th century pottery were recorded, and the remains of a recently demolished late 19th-early 20th century Methodist Chapel were observed. The absence of settlement evidence associated with the ditches may have suggested that these features represented divisions of empty burgage plots, some of which had been referred to as unoccupied in a document of 1408-9.
