Abstract:
The site lay within a Conservation Area and occupied a plot probably first developed during the 13th century. The eastern side, a land boundary, continued the line of the Saxon origin footpath across the Swanpool Walk and beyond. The site may have formed part of the land containing the chapel of St. John in Bedwardine, later the parish church. Records existed of houses and a malthouse on the site of No. 19, rebuilt in 1789-90. Adjacent premises may have remained in use. An 1816 plan showed a malthouse occupying the site of the present warehouse. Rebuilding and extending of Nos. 19 and 21 took place in the mid-20th century, but minute traces of the late 18th century house and outbuildings may have survived within the present structure and were unlikely to be affected by the proposed works. The yard area was crossed by drains and contained a backfilled vehicle inspection pit. It was suspected that the level of the yard area had been raised relative to the warehouse, but the implications for survival of early deposits beneath it were unknown. [Au(abr)]
