Abstract: |
The overall objective of the 1995 research programme on Windy Dido was to establish the landscape history of a swath of land between the Cholderton Park barrow cemetery and the Quarley linear. An excavation took place following an extensive survey of the environs. The excavation successfully addressed all the issues raised in the research design. Five phases of development were identified for the development of the area: Phase 1 represented the initial laying out of the field system. Phase 2 saw the digging of the Windy Dido linear. Phase 3 saw the abandonment of part of the Windy Dido linear and its incorporation into a new linear feature. Phase 4 saw the creation of a palisaded enclosure on Quarley Hill. Phase 5 a hillfort was built exactly coincident with the palisaded enclosure. [Au(adp)] |
