Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to development. The report concluded that the route ran through a rich archaeological landscape with evidence of activity from the early prehistoric period onwards. Along the southern rural part of the line the archaeology was predominantly early prehistoric and Roman, and in the urban part was predominantly later - Roman and medieval. The nature of the archaeological record and the positioning of the route's street lines in the northern part meant that any impact was likely to be slight. Suitable mitigation measures were suggested. In the southern part more detailed information was required to relate the survival and depth of any archaeological features to the impact of construction and that appropriate mitigation was then undertaken. In summary, the impact of on the archaeological record would be largely minimal or negligible provided appropriate measures were taken at each stage to ensure that sufficient data was available and that the works were monitored. For the few points along the route where an impact would be made a detailed mitigation strategy would be designed. [Au(adp)]
