Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during the conversion of Monks Barn from student accommodation to a centre for IR training, and the demolition of the adjoining Link Building and its replacement by a modern structure. The watching brief involved both below ground observations (Link Building) and structural observations of the medieval timber framing of Monks Barn, which was extensively altered in the early 19th century by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. The area of the Link Building was found to have been extensively disturbed by the previous 1970s structure and service trenches. Examination of the interior of Monks Barn revealed some previously unrecorded details of Wyatville's alterations, but generally confirmed the accuracy of the existing descriptions of the structure.
