Abstract: |
A watching brief for the new installation of new drains demonstrated that archaeological deposits associated with the earlier medieval buildings and occupation survived on site. Evidence of structural features, probable pits and occupation layers were recorded and indicate that the extent of this activity seems to coincide fairly precisely with the footprint of the present hall and service yard. This supported the theory that the current hall was built over the site of the previous medieval manor house. There were no medieval deposits beyond the area of the hall but this might have been due to landscaping that had occurred to shape the current grounds and indicated that pre-16th century ground levels were still intact.
