Abstract: |
The site lay just to the southwest of the main site of Havering Palace, and potentially within the area of its formal gardens and ancillary buildings. The medieval and Tudor Palace buildings fell into disrepair during the 17th century, and had disappeared by the early 19th century. A brief archaeological investigation was carried out on the site of a recently demolished modern house. A general inspection of the site was undertaken and a more detailed record of deposits made in selected areas, mainly on the line of exposed or removed foundations. A total of nine small investigation pits were dug, in each case into clean deposits which were assumed to form parts of the underlying natural ground. No features or finds of archaeological significance were noted. Dateable evidence was limited to the 20th century, in the form of the recently demolished house and material from made ground at its western end. There was also some evidence for truncation of the ground surface. [Au(adp)] |
