Abstract: |
The proposed sale of the site of Morland's Brewey and its redevelopment to housing prompted this assessment of the existing buildings on the site and its archaeological potential. Due to the large size of the site and its location close to the centre of one of Britain's oldest continually-inhabitated towns the overall archaeological potential was found to be moderately high although the site appeared to have been located just outside of the defensive boundary of the important Iron Age/early Roman town. The existing brewery buildings were largely of 20th century date but some were of considerable industrial archaeological interest, particularly the tower brewhouse, and the maltings. Neither of these were listed but there were five Grade II Listed Buildings on the site, each of which appeared to pre-date the brewery. [Au] |
