Abstract:		 The site lay on land reclaimed from the tidal foreshore of Sutton Pool. Other sites elsewhere on the Plymouth waterfront had produced prehistoric and Roman finds. The site was granted market rights in the mid 13th century, paired together with the use of the harbour by naval fleets and merchant shipping there was great potential for substantial archaeological remains surviving below the surface.
