Abstract: |
The site was located in an area that had seen intense industrial activity since at least the 16th century, involving the processing or manufactoring of salt, shale, alum and glass. Only the glassworks had ever been systematically investigated by archaeological excavation. The widespread occurrence of industrial debris from shale burning or roasting had been noted within the vicinity of the DWT centre and further buried remains could have been anticipated. [Au] |
