Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of a domestic dwelling. From the known and available archaeological evidence, the site appeared to have uncertain archaeological potential. Although two listed buildings were located in the vicinity of the proposal site, the setting of neither building would have been affected by the proposed development. A single sherd of Roman pottery had been found to the north of the site. However, this was a single, stray find that was considered to have been of minor importance and would not necessarily have signified nearby Romano-British settlement activity. Although the unlisted Granary was located within the proposal site and the Rayners Row was situated in the vicinity of the proposal site, they were considered to have been of minor importance and would not have been affected by this proposal. The photographic evidence (including aerial photographic material) showed the open areas within the proposal site in some detail. No archaeological features were visible on the ground. The origins of settlement of Burnham Overy Staithe were unknown. The place name evidence pointed to an Anglo-Saxon origin and could have indicated the potential for Anglo-Saxon and later settlement features as well as a possible associated earlier waterfront site.
