Abstract: |
A topographic and archaeological survey on the site of three Navvy Settlements (Batty Wife Hole, Sebastopol and Belgravia) associated with the construction of the Settle to Carlisle Railway. Batty Wife Hole was the principle and largest settlment, which contained the railway company offices as well as the commercial and social facilities, and was located around a road junction. The remains recorded included civic buildings, shops and inns along the road frontage, and areas of domestic dwellings which consisted of rows of terraced houses. A hospital was sited some distance from the settlement. Sebastopol was located to the east of Ribblehead viaduct. The earthworks recorded included remains associated with the construction works as well as domestice settlement. The former included the brickworks and drying sheds, tramways, a locomotive shed, quarries and a limekiln. Rows of terraced houses were located to the east of these remains, with further individual houses, probably the 'suburb' of Belgravia to the north. The majority of the domestic dwellings appeared to have been constructed to standard designs, and the ephemeral nature of the earthworks and documentary sources suggested that most were built of timber with no foundations. The ground plans of the civic buildings and shops at Batty Wife Hole were more varied, and some at least had stone foundations. [Au(abr)] |
