Abstract: |
Six foundation pits for a new cow shed within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Deerhurst Priory (county no 367), the site of a religious house and community dating from the early ninth century, were archaeologically excavated. A cultivation soil containing post-medieval material below the modern hardstanding was revealed, interpreted as a garden soil post-dating the conversion of the property from a religious to a domestic house after the Priory was dissolved in 1540. A linear feature of unknown function pre-dating the garden soil was also identified. [Au(adp)] |
