Abstract:
An archaeological appraisal of a proposed 3km water pipeline identified 14 archaeological sites within the vicinity of the pipeline route. The most significant site within the study area was the earthwork remains of a subcircular embanked enclosure of possible Iron Age date on Castle Hill (SMR 10). Flint scatters collected from within the enclosure, predominantly of Neolithic date, indicated earlier activity or occupation within the area of the enclosure. The site was a SAM. A cropmark site of a trackway and possible enclosure of uncertain date was recorded to the east of the SAM and this was bisected by the proposed route of the water pipeline. The remaining sites within the study area consisted of artefact findspots, a well site and former quarries of probable 19th century date recorded on the 1st edition OS map of 1854. The proposed route would not have an impact on the SAM but a watching brief of topsoil stripping within the corridor was recommended as a precautionary measure where the route ran in fields to the north of the site. To the north of Green Lane a route amendment away from a cropmark of a possible trackway and associated enclosure was recommended. If this was not feasible then a geophysical survey in advance of construction should clarify the nature and extent of the cropmarks where they were bisected by the proposed corridor. [Au(abr)]
